The name on everybody’s lips is going to be…Angelica! POSE and American Horror Story fans alike can rejoice, as Broadway’s Chicago has just announced that Angelica will be joining the cast as Roxie Hart starting in September.
Angelica will be joining the likes of L. Morgan Lee, currently starring in A Strange Loop, in leading the charge for outstanding Black transgender representation on Broadway. L Morgan Lee recently broke ground when she became the first known openly transgender person to be noninated in any acting category by the Tony Awards.
On Angelica’s Broadway debut, GLAAD VP of Communications & Talent Anthony Allen Ramos stated:
“‘Chicago’s’ Roxie Hart is one of the most recognizable, iconic, and beloved characters in the history of Broadway, and a true talent like Angelica Ross will delight audiences with her impressive acting, singing and performance skills. Angelica is also a respected leader in the transgender community, and joins L Morgan Lee as trans women of color currently starring on Broadway.”
Of the past few years, other notable trans performers on Broadway include Peppermint – who broke ground as the first openly trans woman to originate a principal role on Broadway, Alexandra Billings who appeared as Madame Morrible in Wicked, and Straight White Men’s Kate Bornstein and Ty Defoe.
