The LGBTQ community has been facing a number of attacks. These attacks are falling especially hard on LGBTQ people of color. Spaces for accurate education community-building has been increasingly difficult as anti-LGBTQ activists and politicians in power, and white supremacists spread disinformation that lead to a lack of safety in the LGBTQ community.
Black Femme Brunch is stepping up to help foster community among Black queer people. The organization’s mission is “creating consensual, educational, supported and well–resourced spaces for Black queer and trans folks to explore pleasure, play and build community.” In the midst of attacks on the LGBTQ community and the wide range of orientations, identities, and expressions, we can agree that there needs to be safe spaces for more nuanced conversations and education.
This Memorial Day weekend, Black Femme Brunch is hosting RAINBLOW, a space in Washington DC for Black queer and trans individuals to engage in “inquiry, exploration and play in pleasure”. Last year, special attention was given to COVID protocols to ensure that immunocompromised and disabled LGBTQ people would be able to safely participate. This year it is in an even larger venue (with a live DJ!) to ensure that they can keep COVID-safe protocols with more participants. If you are in DC, this is not an event to miss.
There is so much need for education and solidarity within the LGBTQ community especially nowadays. It is so important that an organization like Black Femme Brunch exists. We as an LGBTQ community should do our best to ensure safe programming and community building for many years to come.
