You’ll never guess who is stepping into the underworld and making their Broadway debut!
Theater and pop music fans alike should get excited as queer music sensation Betty Who joins the cast of Hadestown!
Starting September 5th, the GLAAD Media Award nominee will be joining Tony nominee Phillip Boykin in the lead roles of Persephone and Hades in this soon-to-be Broadway classic.
Hadestown, which was written entirely by Anaïs Mitchell, tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice intertwined with the tale of Hades, King of the Underworld, and his wife Persephone. The wildly creative and visually stunning show has won 8 Tony Awards and features a vibrant yet haunting ensemble cast.
Betty Who spoke to Rolling Stone about what an honor it is to be joining such an exciting project, saying, “Hadestown is such a special show for so many reasons, but a huge draw for me personally was the incredible music written by Anais Mitchell. I have loved Anais Mitchell songs since I was softly sobbing at boarding school to ‘Orion’ on my iPod.”
“I’m so inspired by her songwriting and storytelling in this show, and I literally cannot wait to sing it eight times a week,” she added.
She also spoke about how being a part of a Broadway production has always been a dream of hers. “The opportunity to play Persephone in Hadestown is a dream come true. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Wicked, the trap door, the way I sobbed. The BELTING!”
“Musical theatre was one of my first loves — one of the main reasons I wanted to sing in the first place. So to have arrived at this place in my life, making my Broadway debut,” she shared.
For Pride Month in 2022, Betty Who joined forces with GLAAD to drive awareness for our Vote with Pride program that aimed to increase voter turnout.
Betty Who recently performed at the White House for Pride Month and her hit song “Blow Out My Candle” raised funds and awareness for GLAAD, which you can read more about here.
