Non-profit and advocacy organizations for a variety of causes joined forces to go purple and bring awareness to anti-LGBTQ bullying for this year’s Spirit Day! By going purple they’re participating in the world’s largest anti-LGBTQ bullying campaign and showing their support for queer youth across the globe. Below are social media posts from allied nonprofits:
The LGBTQ Task Force supported Spirit Day through an information blurb about what Spirit Day is. They write:
“Today, LGBTQ youth, and especially our trans and nonbinary youth, are experiencing a level of scrutiny in schools we have never seen, leading to an environment rife with stressors beyond the peer-to-peer bullying of the past. From book bans to sports teams bans, to bathroom restrictions and teachers barred from using students’ pronouns, the means by which a student can express themselves and see others like them are increasingly being challenged.
“GLAAD’s Spirit Day offers LGBTQ youth and their families a means of visibility and existence only made possible by providing life-saving visibility for those who need it more than ever.
“Today is #SpiritDay, a day when we are invited to wear purple to show our support for LGBTQ youth and to oppose bullying.”Spirit Day is spearheaded by our friends at GLAAD. You may have meant to visit them at: www.glaad.org/spiritday
“GLAD (GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders) supports #SpiritDay and LGBTQ youth every day. If you’d like more information on GLAD’s youth resources, visit www.glad.org/youth
“Thank you for supporting LGBTQ youth!”
#SpiritDay is an annual LGBTQ awareness day observed on the 3rd Thursday in October. Started by a teenager, it was created in response to a rash of widely publicized bullying-related suicides of gay school students in 2010, including that of Tyler Clementi.💜 #OUTsyracuse pic.twitter.com/7GdmZ2lsmU
