In Netflix’s new drama Boots, a bullied teen impulsively enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps and discovers unexpected purpose, resilience, and brotherhood among a diverse group of fellow recruits. The series explores identity, masculinity, and belonging through moments of humor, heartbreak, and hope.
Stars Miles Heizer, Liam Oh, and Max Parker sat down with GLAAD Communications Manager José Useche to talk about self-discovery, fear, and the bonds that shape us.
Heizer, who plays Cameron, shared that Boots offers a refreshing take on queer representation.
“His arc isn’t about discovering his sexuality, it starts with him being comfortable with that,” Heizer said. “Once that fear of being discovered goes away, he’s able to grow and create real bonds with people.”
Parker, who portrays Sullivan, reflected on the isolation many queer people faced in the 1990s. “As a gay man myself, I think we’ve all gone through some form of hiding,” he explained. “With Sullivan, it’s amplified by the era, he doesn’t have anyone to turn to, and you see how lost that can make someone.”
Liam Oh, who plays Ray, spoke about the evolving dynamic between his character and Cameron. “There’s deep love between Ray and Cameron,” Oh noted. “But as Cameron grows, Ray struggles to accept that he doesn’t need him in the same way anymore.”
Earlier this month, Netflix and Sony Pictures Television hosted a special celebration at The Standard High Line in New York City for Boots, now one of Netflix’s Top 10 shows. The two-part event featured a Clips & Conversation panel with the cast and creators, followed by a Marine-inspired “BOOTSCamp” experience where guests and talent teamed up for challenges, obstacle courses, and plenty of “OORAH” spirit.

Through its honest storytelling and heartfelt performances, Boots captures the courage it takes to grow, to connect, and to be truly seen.
