The renowned fashion, science and activism event HIV Unwrapped is set to have its U.S. debut at New York Fashion Week on Saturday, September 13 at Nexus Club New York.
Presented by +Life, a multi-media brand dedicated to eliminating HIV stigma, the show pairs emerging Parsons School of Design students with leading HIV scientists to create couture inspired by molecular science, resilience, and community. The electrifying, choreographed runway will also spotlight the lived experiences of people living with HIV and those working to end the epidemic.
HIV Unwrapped was originally created as a joint project between Positive East, the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM), and fashion designer Patrick McDowell. Using the lab coat as a starting point, the project asks: What would you wear as an HIV scientist or researcher that reflects your identity and your work? The result is a striking intersection of science and style, turning research into runway, and activism into art.
“This isn’t just a runway show; it’s a bold statement to smash stigma, spark conversation, and remind the world that HIV is only part of our story,” said Karl Schmid, executive producer of HIV Unwrapped. “I’m proud to be part of a team turning science into style and compassion into couture and you won’t want to miss a single stitch.”
“By merging fashion, storytelling, and science, this initiative opens new doors for HIV awareness and visibility, especially for younger generations who may not realize the ongoing impact of this epidemic,” said Anthony Ramos, Vice President of Communications and Talent.
HIV Unwrapped will also be filmed as a +Life original broadcast special, premiering in conjunction with World AIDS Day (Dec. 1). The special will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the conception and production of featured garments, HIV Unwrapped‘s previous global iterations, and interviews with up-and-coming designers and groundbreaking scientists.
Following acclaimed editions in Australia, Rwanda, and the UK, the U.S. debut is presented in partnership with GLAAD, ASHM, EqualPride, and CFDA, with design mentorship from Tanner Fletcher.
