Apple TV+’s beloved series The Buccaneers is back for a second season! Fans everywhere have been anxiously awaiting the return of their favorite sapphic ship Ma-noria, and on June 18th, the wait is finally over!

Premiering in late 2023, The Buccaneers follows a group of fun-loving young American girls in London’s Gilded Age, as they navigate their new city and all the romance, drama, intrigue and adventure that comes along with it.
To talk about the new season and her character’s love affair, Josie Totah joined GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos for a chat!
“They explore their relationship a little bit deeper,” Totah teased for all the shippers of her character Mabel and her love interest Honoria, played by Mia Threapleton. “They get to kind of have this love story, even though it’s slightly behind the scenes for a while.”
She continued, “You see them growing in themselves and evolving, and I think people will be really happy about sort of how that progresses and it’s not just a sort of closeted love story for much longer.”

Totah talked about how fun it is to play a queer character in a period piece; “I think it was rewarding to see her overcome the sort of customs and culture and kind of just spread her wings and become the truest version of herself.”
Totah warned that it’s not all smooth sailing for fans’ favorite ship, calling Honoria “a baby gay” and explaining that, “Mabel’s a bit more experienced and she’s been around the block. Let’s just say that. And Honoria hasn’t, and I think that that sort of creates a rift and ultimately is what leads to penultimate scenes together in the end of the season.”

Besides the romance and drama, Totah’s other favorite aspect of the show is the fashion! “I’m very involved,” she shared. “I just find it really fun. I have an amazing dress, probably my favorite dress I’ve worn in my career in a movie or show… It’s a very gorgeous, booby dress!”
Totah hopes that fans who watch the show have the chance to be “entertained and see this sisterhood grow. But also as sisters do, sometimes they fall apart and come back together. And these women are really interesting because they’re flawed, they’re imperfect, and I think that that is really evident this year.”

She spoke about how much she loves working with her co-stars, specifically Mia Threapleton. She shared that their “dichotomy is very fun,” while Threapleton is listening to Beethoven, Totah is blasting Nicki Minaj!

Speaking of friendship, Totah talked a bit about the Love Transcends project in Cosmopolitan she took part in with fellow trans icons Miss Benny and Dylan Mulvaney!

“Having my first sort of trans friends in that way is amazing and it’s so special. She continued, “I just am so lucky that they are are icons in their own right, but we joke that even if we were like farmers or just like like ugly kids in Michigan that we’d still be best friends and it’s like not just because of that. It’s like we are just truly sisters.”
To close, Totah spoke candidly to Ramos, saying, “You’ve gotten to see me grow up, basically helped me grow up. You’ve helped raise me in some regards.”
