SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains specific details about episode 4 of the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us.
A whole lot of action, shockers, and surprise faces pop up in episode 4 of The Last of Us. From Drake and Josh alum Josh Peck appearing in the beginning to Oscar nominated and Emmy-winning actor Jeffery Wright scaring the bejeezus out of us as baddie Isaac, there is a lot happening. But balancing out the mushroom infected action and bloody violence is the very human — and queer — romance blossoming between Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced).
Episode 4 finds Ellie and Dina in Seattle and on the hunt for Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her WLF pals. In case you forgot, they killed our gruff, yet lovable Joel (Pedro Pascal). While navigating the post-apocalyptic version of the city overrun with foliage, they see rainbow flags and symbols on buildings which are clearly located in an LGBTQ neighborhood.
“Why are there so many rainbows?” asks Dina. Keep in mind, neither of them know about the rainbow flag and what it represents.
Ellie responds, “I dunno… maybe they were all optimists.”
When they discover a WLF base in the distance, they wait til dark to approach on foot. While in a music shop that looks like a lush greenhouse, Ellie finds a pristinely preserved guitar and starts playing an acoustic version of A-ha’s “Take On Me”. Dina overhears from the other room and comes in. Ellie pauses, but Dina insists she continues. Like the dance scene from earlier in the season, the moment honored the video game so well.
This gentle moment is immediately followed up during nightfall with wildly stressful moments when Ellie and Dina make their way to the WLF compound. They get chased by clickers after they escape WLF henchmen — and Ellie gets bit! But as we know, she can’t get infected. Dina doesn’t. At first, she does not trust Ellie. She sleeps on it.
The next morning, Dina decides that she trusts Ellie. She also decides to tell her that she’s pregnant! It’s Jesse’s (Young Mazino), obviously. Then, in the throes of passion, they sleep together for the first time!
