“Oh, no! Now I’m worried what will happen to these two.” That’s what I thought, pulse racing, as I watched a dramatic cliffhanger scene in El secreto del río (Secret of the River) on Netflix. That’s the power of good storytelling–it makes your heart race—even though you know very well you’re watching a series, aka, made up drama. Not your drama. And yet it is yours—you’ve literally taken it to heart.
Movies have been described as empathy machines, and they are. All well-told stories, whether on big or small screens, are also worry machines, joy machines, lust machines … a motor for so many powerful emotions—even some you may not have felt for a long time.
When those impactful stories are LGBTQ-inclusive and in Spanish—even better. With over 65 million Latine people in the United States, and about 20% of Gen Z. Latines saying they identify as LGBTQ, it’s imperative that the stories we see include our community.
The team at GLAAD got the feels many times as we watched and read some of the best stories in Spanish created in the United States, Latin America and Spain for GLAAD Media Award consideration.
This year’s nominees in the best series category include:
- Cris Miró (Max), the life of legendary Argentine performer and trans woman Cris Miró.
- Land of Women (Apple TV+): A woman (Eva Longoria) on the run with her mother (Carmen Maura) and trans daughter (Victoria Bazúa) finds refuge and community in the Spanish wine country.
- Nadie nos va a extrañar (Amazon Prime Video), in which a lovable troupe of Mexican high schoolers battle bullies and try to embrace their true selves.
- El secreto del río In English, Secret of the River (Netflix) a story of love and friendship set in a town with a vibrant Muxe community – a third gender recognized among the Zapotec people in Oaxaca.
- Vestidas de azul (Atresplayer), A welcome return visit with some of the Spanish women we first fell in love with in the acclaimed series Veneno.
We’re also proud to honor The Q Agenda on LatiNation, for its five years and over 100 episodes of great interviews by an all-queer cast, as well as LaVerdrag, Mexico’s first news show hosted by a drag queen, named after a clever play on words blending the words ‘la verdad’ (the truth) and drag.
In addition to the categories for work in Spanish, films like Problemista with Julio Torres and Tilda Swinton and 20,000 Species of Bees from Spain received GLAAD Media Award nominations. Best Musical Artist nominees include Bi+ icons Kali Uchis and Omar Apollo. In the Breakthrough Artist category, nominees include Villano Antillano, Young Miko and Michaela Jaé, representing our talented Latine community.
Congratulations to legends like Ricky Martin (Palm Royale), Nava Mau (Baby Reindeer) Julio Torres (Fantasmas), Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows) and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Loot) whose series were also nominated for a GLAAD Media Award.
Other Latine talent highlighted this year include the incredible documentary Hummingbirds made by two Latine teens and set in Laredo, Texas, the Tres Leches Podcast, co-hosted by Dímelo guest Ian Paget, and the groundbreaking “Red Ink: A Tribute to Cecilia Gentili” – honored with a special recognition.
Please get on your platform of choice and watch these series and videos, support great journalism about HIV stigma in Dallas’ Latino community and the enormous legacy of Cecilia Gentili, add queer latine musicians to your Spotify playlist, get to know the cast of The Q Agenda and watch La Verdrag. And then, share with a friend or on your social media.
Let’s get these great stories and artists seen, heard and trending on social media. The more great work gets noticed, the more great work gets made.
And so, with heaps of admiration and gratitude for the journalists, show runners, creators, actors and so many others who went out of their way to create something truly excellent, we present to you the nominees for GLAAD Media Awards in Spanish Language categories.
