Beyoncé and JAY-Z are longtime allies and supporters of the LGBTQ community who use their global platforms to share messages that inspire and change the world for the better. During the 2019 30th GLAAD Media Awards, Beyoncé and Jay Z were presented with the Vanguard Award and talked about Uncle Johnnys impact in her life.
“I want to dedicate this award to my Uncle Johnny, the most fabulous gay man I’ve ever known, who helped raise me and my sister, he lived his truth. He was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country wasn’t as accepting and witnessing his battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever lived. I’m hopeful that his struggles serve to open pathways for other young people to live more freely. LGBTQ rights are human rights.”
Beyoncé has spoken out against laws that discriminate against LGBTQ people and celebrated the passage of marriage equality nationwide, saying that “everyone has the right to love who they love.” She has spoken out loudly for LGBTQ youth and told her followers on social media that “LGBTQ students need to know we support them.” The Renaissance film is believed to honor the Black community and embrace queerness by incorporating the LGBTQ community within the film and music.
