Netflix has released the first trailer for the George C. Wolfe-directed feature Rustin starring Colman Domingo as the titular queer civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. The film is set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
With Barack & Michelle Obama serving as executive producers under their Higher Ground production banner, Wolfe directs a script from Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black follows Rustin as he leads the charge in orchestrating 1963’s March on Washington, cementing himself as one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known.
Rustin, who worked alongside Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, challenged authority and was persistent with his work as he made history with a movement in a march toward freedom that still resonates today.
The film’s all star cast includes Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, CCH Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald.
Rustin opens in select theaters November 3 before debuting on Netflix November 17.
