Spoiler alert: this article contains details about Drag Race Mexico’s season 1, episode 8.
The previous episode ended with the departure of Margaret Y Ya, a sad moment for many fans of the show. As is tradition, before leaving she left a message written with lipstick on the werk room mirror: “Oh, well. LOL. Don’t make jokes without me.” Lady Kero, who beat her in the lip sync, reacted by saying “I’m so sorry, but I wanted to continue. I love you and see you soon.”
There are only 5 participants left! The winner will take a year’s worth of Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics, a crown and a scepter from Amped Accessories, and 550,000 MXN (approximately $32,000).
We saw the queens share an emotional moment in the werk room. Matraka mentioned that “There is a part of my inner child that knows that he is very happy to be here, and another part that still doesn’t believe it because it is very crazy.”
The sound of the siren interrupted them, and Lolita Banana and Valentina came out to tell them about the mini challenge of the week. The queens are tasked with becoming lucha libre wrestlers, a type of professional wrestling in Mexico where men, almost always, fight wearing a mask, since their character is more important than their true identity. Each queen would have to create a look following that aesthetic and come up with a name in 5 minutes. They did a spectacular photo shoot in a ring with the pit crew guys. Lady Kero won and took home a prize of 18,000 MXN (approximately $1,052).
Later, Lolita Banana explained the maxi challenge of this episode: to “test their creativity, design and sewing skills again, creating a look from scratch using the best denim” from Levi’s. The guest judge was actress Mabel Cadena, star of films such as Dance of the 41 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
On the runway, Lolita Banana was moved to tears and Valentina told them that they resembled a band like the Spice Girls or RBD because they were all dressed in denim. Oscar Madrazo said Gala Varo’s look, which featured a skirt made from 7 jackets, reminded him of Britney Spears on the 2001 American Music Awards red carpet. Mabel Cadena said she could wear Matraka’s look for an event, and Lolita Banana praised her “chola punk” concept.
Lady Kero, Cristian Peralta and Regina Voce were safe. For the lip sync, Matraka and Gala Varo were declared the top two and faced off performing Bizcochito by Rosalía. Matraka showed off replicating the official choreography and both gave a very funny show. In the end, there was a surprise — instead of the usual elimination, Matraka won and no one went home.
