This week GLAAD joined the stars of “The Real Housewives of New York City” at their red carpet season premiere event in NYC.
GLAAD’s Yolanda Lenge spoke with the housewives about their thoughts on the importance of LGBTQ representation in reality TV and what it is like starring alongside the first openly queer housewife on the season, Jenna Lyons. They couldn’t have been more excited and supportive of Lyons joining the show.

Lyons spoke about how grateful she is for her fans and co-star’s support. “I’m proud. I didn’t realize how much it meant to people,” Lyons shared. She said she has received countless messages from LGBTQ fans thrilled to finally have the representation they deserve. “I’m so happy to hold the torch.”
She then spoke about how disappointing it is to see the efforts being made to silence and erase the queer community. “Nothing brilliant or interesting has ever come from limitations.”

Lenge also spoke with the franchise’s host, Andy Cohen. “It feels great to have a gay woman on The Real Housewives of New York,” Cohen shared in excitement. He then spoke about why Jenna Lyons was the perfect fit to take on this role. “She’s a player, she’s aspirational, she’s a name, she’s funny, and she’s someone that you want to watch.”
“The Real Housewives of New York City” premieres July 16 at 9/8c on Bravo, and streaming on Peacock!
