Exciting news for LGBTQ superhero fans! It was revealed that Stephanie Brown, in this week’s new episode of The CW’s Gotham Knights, is a lesbian and her character will have a coming-out journey that will resonate with so many viewers and fans of the show.
Gotham Knights writer, producer, and co-creator, Natalie Abrams, took to Twitter to share her excitement and thought process behind making this decision. But in doing so, she also vulnerably shared a little bit about the super-SHEro that has always been within herself too. Abrams reinforces the power of seeing yourself reflected back to you in media. And for her, as a creator, she gets the ultimate honor of penning a little bit of her own story and experience into a show that will no doubt inspire so many to live life boldly as their true selves.

“The moment I’ve been dreaming about for two years, the moment I’ve been desperately waiting for fans to see has FINALLY arrived. In the world of Gotham Knights, Stephanie Brown is a lesbian,” she announced.
She then talked about how Stephanie’s coming out journey was inspired by her own. “Stephanie Brown is one of my favorite characters. As a child of an alcoholic, I’ve deeply related to her story in the comics.”
She revealed she has had this planned since the very beginning. “Of course, someone who has spent her whole life having to put on a facade never got a chance to figure out who she really was. It just felt right.”
Abrams hopes that by telling Stephanie’s story, other LGBTQ people who may be struggling will feel less alone. “I thought, hoped, dreamed that, by telling this story, someone else out there might see a reflection of themselves on TV and finally find themself too.”
