The 76th Annual Tony Awards will take place tonight, June 11, on CBS and Paramount+. This year’s broadcast will be unscripted due to the ongoing Writer’s Guild of America strike. There are a number of openly queer nominees this year, such as Sean Hayes (Good Night, Oscar) for Best Leading Actor in A Play; J. Harrison Ghee (Some Like It Hot) and Ben Platt (Parade) for Best Leading Actor in a Musical; Jordan E. Cooper (Ain’t No Mo’) and Brandon Uranowitz (Leopoldstadt) for Best Featured Actor in A Play; Alex Newell (Shucked) and Kevin Cahoon (Shucked) for Best Featured Actor in a Musical; and Julia Lester (Into The Woods) for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Openly gay directors Casey Nicholaw, Michael Arden, and Jack O’Brien are also up for Best Direction awards for their work in musicals Some Like It Hot, Parade, and Shucked, respectively. The Los Angeles Pride Parade, which heads directly through downtown Hollywood starting at 11am PST today, will be streaming live on Hulu this year! Openly gay comedian John Early’s new comedy special is out this week on HBO! In his first ever HBO special, titled John Early: Now More Than Ever, Early utilizes an unconventional format and his own particular brand of humor, which includes covers of Britney Spears and Neil Young in the mix of musical numbers, sketch comedy, and stand-up.
