—In the days after the deadly shooting at a Colorado Springs LGBTQ club, falsely claimed that drag events “sexualize” children. Falsely equated drag story hours, where performers in costume and makeup read to children, to strip clubs.
—Misgendered pediatrician and HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Rachel Levine, and used vile, false and harmful “groomer” rhetoric.
—Opposes marriage equality, writing on her web site, “I oppose efforts to redefine marriage as anything other than the union of one man and one woman.” In June 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in the landmark civil rights case of Obergefell v. Hodges that the fundamental right of same-sex couples to marry is guaranteed by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Her site also declares her opposition to gender-affirming treatment: “I am fighting to protect families from extremists telling our children that it’s ok for them to get a sex change and take puberty blocking drugs. It is wrong to sacrifice the safety and wellbeing of our children on the altar of radical leftist ideology.” Every major medical association including the American Medical Association and American Academy of Pediatrics support access to school sports as important for children’s physical, social and emotional growth.
—Introduced legislation in the House to block research into gender-affirming treatments for transgender youth, claiming that trans youth are “sexualized and used for horrific sexual ‘research’” when given life-saving puberty blockers and calling transitioning “genital mutilation.” Her bill would block federal funds from being “used to fund research or publications relating to gender transition in individuals under the age of 18.”
—Mocked gender nonconforming and transgender people by tweeting “I identify as non-Bidenary.” The previous year she tweeted a similarly unfunny joke: “My pronoun is ‘Patriot.’”
—Said that the Equality Act is actually about the “supremacy of gays and lesbians and transvestites” above all other Americans. The Equality Act would add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing federal civil rights laws. It would ban anti-LGBTQ discrimination in employment, education, housing, public accommodations, jury selection, credit and federal programs. “Transvestite” is considered an offensive term and is not applicable to transgender people.
—Spewed hateful rhetoric describing the Equality Act as “dangerous” and “disgusting,” and baselessly vilified transgender girls and athletes when she asked on the House floor, “Where is the equity in this legislation for the young girls across America who will have to look behind their backs as they change in school locker rooms, just to make sure there isn’t a confused man trying to catch a peek?” In fact, transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent victimization, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault, according to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
