Terry Schilling
Executive Director, American Principles Project
—Launched a petition to attack transgender student athletes, misgendering trans women and girls.
—Created ads attacking the Equality Act and transgender participation in sports that were rejected by Facebook for false and damaging content, suggesting that nondiscrimination policies would allow boys to join girls’ sports organizations just because they want a win, not because they are transgender. The ads ran in multiple states; none of APP’s preferred candidates were elected.
—Created false texts making up quotes attributed to then-Vice President Biden.
—Misgendered transgender children, made false claims about transgender participation in sports and claimed to be “building the NRA for families” (the NRA has filed for bankruptcy after accusations of corruption and bilking members of millions).
—APP hired an actor who claims to be a former transgender American for false ads attacking transgender people. The actor later participated in the deadly siege at the Capitol and praised the extremist group, the Proud Boys.
—Organized campaign bus tour during the pandemic to mobilize voters in the Georgia Senate runoff to include Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Mike Lee (R-UT), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Steve Daines (R-MT), and Tommy Tuberville (R-AL). Many of the senators also coordinated an attempt to contest President Biden’s Electoral College vote certification days before the deadly siege at the Capitol.
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
