Kayleigh McEnany
33rd White House Press Secretary
- Updated: April 21, 2023
—In a press briefing, asked whether President Trump would lift the ban on transgender military service, now that the Supreme Court ruled employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity was prohibited under the Civil Rights Act, McEnany deflected, saying, “I haven’t talked to him” about the policy, then went on to list several false claims about Pres. Trump having “a great record” with the LGBTQ community like attempting to decriminalize being gay worldwide and reducing the deferral period for gay and bi men to donate blood. The Trump administration’s decriminalization efforts have been called “nothing more than a series of self-promoting Twitter photos“ and the deferral period is discriminatory at any length and not based in science.
—Fourth White House Press Secretary under President Trump, following Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Stephanie Grisham who held no regular press briefings.
—Appeared on a radio show hosted by Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. She appeared on the same episode as Ken Williams, co-founder of the so-called “ex-gay” resource group Equipped to Love, who spoke in opposition to a California bill seeking to outlaw conversion therapy.
—Dismissed claims of marriage discrimination prior the Supreme Court’s marriage ruling as nothing more than “farcical blabber.”
—Argued against transgender bathroom access on the basis that “ this could be utilized by some men, for instance, to go into female bathrooms, it’s happened at Target, which does have the same policy in place. Voyeurism issues where cameras were put by men taking advantage of the policies, not transgender individuals, men, straight men coming in and really being a predator against women.”
—Argued that the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality is a threat to religious rights.
—Said it was “awesome” that late Justice Antonin Scalia criticized a pro-marriage equality ruling.
—Dismissed openly gay CNN anchor Don Lemon’s concerns about Mike Pence‘s anti-LGBTQ views by saying “Mike Pence loves all people.” (video starts at 2:00)
—Called modern feminism an “embarrassment,” suggesting that “the feminists of today reduce women to their sexuality, and in doing so, set women’s rights back by huge strides.”
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
