Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1.) The trailer for Greta Gertwig’s upcoming Barbie movie dropped this week! The film follows Margot Robbie as the eponymous doll after she is expelled from Barbieland for not looking perfect. In the face of this, she sets off to find happiness in the human world. There were also a number of promotional posters for the film released this week. The film features a number of queer actors, including Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, and Scott Evans. Don’t miss the Barbie movie, in theaters July 21!
2.) Of an Age, a queer coming of age film from gay director Goran Stolevski, is streaming on Peacock now! Set in the summer of 1999, the film follows a seventeen year old amateur ballroom dancer, who experiences an unexpected and intense 24-hour romance with his friend’s older brother. Catch Of An Age now on Peacock!
3.) In casting news, gay actor Murray Bartlett will co-star in the upcoming rock opera O’Dessa. O’Dessa, set in a post-apocalyptic future, follows a girl on a quest to find a family heirloom, leading her to a vast and strange city where she finds love and trouble. Queer singer Halsey was tapped for MaXXXine, an upcoming horror film in the Mia Goth-verse from A24. The third film in the franchise picks up after the events of X, as the sole survivor makes her way out to Hollywood, determined to make it as an actress. 4.) In more queer casting news, trans actress Josiah Totah has joined the cast of Faces, a reimagining of a 70s horror flick of the same name. The controversial original film was shot documentary style and showed a number of horrific ways to die, most of which were fake, but also contained real footage of deaths and the aftermath of death. Queer non-binary actor Bex Taylor-Klaus will co-star in indie comedy Re-Election, which tells the story of a middle-aged man whose life has remained stagnant since losing the race for Senior Class President. In an effort to regain his life, he re-enrolls in high school to run again, but realizes he has a lot to learn about Gen-Z. Non-binary actor Bella Ramsey has been tapped to star in Monstrous Beauty, which follows a young woman who is born impoverished and completely covered in hair, and eventually receives an education where those with strange appearances mingle with aristocracy. 5.) The trailer for season two of HBO’s comedy Somebody Somewhere dropped this week! In the sophomore season, Sam (Bridget Everett) continues to find solace in singing with her community of outsiders while settling into a comfortable routine with Joel (out actor and comedian Jeff Hiller). Trans drag king and comedian Murray Hill also reprises his role as Fred, a University soil scientist by day, and Master of Ceremonies in a flashy suit by night. 6.) The upcoming season of Doctor Who is shaping up to be the queerest one yet, and it’s not even close. RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar Jinkx Monsoon will play a major role in the upcoming season, and trans actor Pete McHale will join in an unknown role. These announcements add to the already queer season, with Ncuti Gatwa set to play the first gay doctor, trans Heartstopper actress Yasmin Finney as the companion, and gay actor Neil Patrick Harris set to appear. Stay tuned for updates on the new season of Doctor Who, expected in 2024.
7.) Netflix has ordered a new series from queer non-binary actor and producer Mae Martin titled Tall Pines. Tall Pines is a thriller set in what appears to be a peaceful town, but the sinister underbelly of the “troubled teen industry” lurks in the shadows. While details on the series are limited, we’re excited to see what Martin brings to Netflix with the show!

8.) Queer duo Mediocre released their debut EP, titled Know You’re Screwed; watch the music video for their track “Together Together” below! In other music news, queer singer/songwriter Shygirl dropped a new song titled “Playboy / Positions” with an accompanying music video, from the upcoming deluxe edition of her album Nymph titled Nymph_o, and queer duo Club Eat released a new single titled “Clothes“, from their upcoming debut album Start. Additionally, queer Toronto-based artist Ralph has shared her sapphic single “Scary Hot“, off her upcoming 222 EP, due out this summer; be sure to check out the music video!
9.) Gay actor Neil Patrick Harris has joined Peter Pan Goes Wrong on Broadway for a limited run! Harris will play Francis, who plays the narrator and other roles in ‘Cornley Drama Society’s play-within-the-play Peter Pan. Harris’ run starts on Tuesday, April 11 and ends on April 30. Get tickets now, you’ve only got a few weeks before Harris leaves Neverland!
10.) The MTV Movie and TV Award nominations were announced this week, with a number of queer inclusive projects receiving looks. Scream VI and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever were nominated for “Best Movie,” with queer performer Demi Lovato also taking home a nomination for their Scream VI song “Still Alive.” Stranger Things, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Wolf Pack, Yellowstone, and Yellowjackets all are vying for “Best Show,” and these six of the seven nominations in this category are queer inclusive! Stranger Things, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Teen Wolf: The Movie got looks for “Best Kick-Ass Cast.” Non-binary actor Bella Ramsey took home nominations for “Breakthrough Performance” and “Best Duo” (alongside Pedro Pascal) for their role in The Last of Us, and Emma D’Arcy, also non-binary, was nominated for “Breakthrough Performance” for House of the Dragon. Queer actress Aubrey Plaza was nominated for “Best in a Show” for The White Lotus. “Best Kiss” has two queer nominations, one for Harry Styles and David Dawson in My Policeman, and one for Selena Gomez and Cara Delivigne in Only Murders in the Building (Dawson and Delivigine are both queer). Queer musician/actress Lady Gaga was nominated for “Best Song” for “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick. RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars was nominated for “Best Competition Series,” and RuPaul was nominated for “Best Host” and “Best Duo” (alongside Michelle Visage). Finally, out actress Drew Barrymore was nominated for “Best Host,” and she’ll be hosting the awards themselves too! Don’t miss the MTV Movie and TV Awards, May 7 on MTV! The Webby Awards nominees were also announced this week, with queer-inclusive nominations like I Like to Watch with Trixie and Katya, the RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7 queen ruveal, and The Wilds season two.
