The GLAAD Wrap: ‘The Blue Caftan’ and ‘Your Place or Mine’ out now, new music from Rebecca Black and Kelela, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1.) The Blue Caftan, a queer Arabic-language drama, has its limited theatrical release today! The film follows the middle-aged husband and wife owners of a caftan store in Morocco, whose relationship is upended when they find a handsome young apprentice. Don’t wait to check and see if The Blue Caftan is coming to a theater near you!

2.) A new romantic comedy from Netflix titled Your Place or Mine is streaming today! The film follows two best friends who switch homes for a week, which provides them with new insight into each other’s lives. The film features out comedian and actor Tig Notaro as one of the main character’s friends. Catch Your Place or Mine, streaming on Netflix now!

3.) AIDS crisis documentary Commitment to Life will make its world premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival tomorrow! The documentary follows Los Angeles’ gay community and allies as they moved to combat the disease despite a lack of resources, societal fear of the illness, and a government who avoided helping at all costs. Specifically, the documentary chronicles the role the AIDS Project of Los Angeles played. Keep an eye here for when this project gets a wider release. 

4.) The new project from Adele Lim, the writer of the Crazy Rich Asians screenplay, will be titled Joy Ride, and the studio also unveiled the first still from the film. The movie follows a group of friends on an international adventure after a business trip to Asia goes awry. The film stars queer actores Sherry Cola and Sabrina Wu as two of the central friend group. The film will be out in theaters on June 23rd!

5.) Upcoming Netflix action film Back in Action has added gay actor Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Fleabag), to its cast. The details of the film are currently being kept under wraps. In other casting news, bisexual actress Evan Rachel Wood will co-star in The Adults, an upcoming crime drama. The film follows a brother and sister after they find a dead body long-buried in their parents basement. 

6.) That 90s Show, Netflix’s revival of popular sitcom That 70s Show, was renewed for a second season! The show follows a new generation of teenagers that take over Kitty and Red Forman’s basement when their granddaughter Leia decides to spend her summer in Wisconsin. This includes Ozzie, played by Reyn Doi, a biting gay member of the new squad. Hopefully in the new season, we can meet Ozzie’s long-distance boyfriend!

7.) In music news this week, queer singer Rebecca Black self-released her new album, titled Let Her Burn, on Thursday. While you likely know her from the iconic song “Friday,” Black has come a long way, so go check out her new album! Queer singer Kelela also has an album out this week, titled Raven. This will be the singer’s second studio album. Queer music duo Boyish released a new single titled “Girls Are Mean” today, along with an accompanying visualizer. Queer singer Mathew V released a new single today, a take on George Gershwin’s “The Man I Love,” off his upcoming album titled Anything Goes; check out his live performace of the song! Queer pop-rock artist Ceara Cavalieri also realeased a new single titled “Bad Thing.” Plus, the new music video for Haviah Mighty’s “Room Service” is out now!

8.) Frameline announced the recipients of their 2022/2023 Completion Fund grant this week, splitting the $25,000 award between eight different projects. All of the films, four features and four shorts, center queer stories and storytellers, and were selected by a jury of queer filmmakers and industry professionals. The titles of the projects are AC Unit, Asog, Bella Noche, Chasing Chasing Amy, Do Digital Curanderas Use Eggs in Their Limpias?, Fish Boy, Struggle Sessions, and Who I Am Not.
