The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Being Thunder’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ hit theaters, trailer for ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story’, new music from Reneé Rapp and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1.) Being Thunder, a documentary focused on Two Spirit genderqueer indigenous teenager Sherenté Harris, is out today! The documentary follows Sherenté, who is from Rhode Island’s Narragansett tribe, as they perform traditional dance in competitions at annual regional powwows of New England tribes. However, outdated ideas about the gender binary creates obstacles in Sherenté’s path. Our very own transgender media consultant Dana Aliya Levinson called the documentary “a moving and deeply affecting portrait of an indigenous Two Spirit teenager.” Catch Being Thunder in theaters now!

2.) 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture, a documentary about the use of the word “homosexual” in the bible, has its world premiere at DocNYC tomorrow. The film looks at the 1946 translation of the bible that introduced the word “homosexual” to the religious text, and the societal consequences that followed. See the film in person at DocNYC or online from November 13-27!

3.) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Black Panther, is out in theaters now! The film picks up after the death of King T’Challa, as Wakanda defends itself from forces that seek to strike in a moment of transition. The film also features a brief but explicitly queer moment between Aneka (Michaela Coel) and Ayo (Florence Kasumba). Watch the film in theaters now!

4.) A new trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story, the sequel to the popular 2019 film Knives Out, was released this week. The trailer gives us a closer look at non-binary performer Janelle Monáe in their role as Cassandra Brand. In the film, a murder mystery party takes a dark turn when someone turns up dead and gay character Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case. The star-studded sequel comes out November 23 in theaters, don’t miss it! In other trailer news, A24’s The Whale dropped a trailer this week, watch it here. 

5.) Queer actors Lane Webber, June Laporte, and Hallea Jones were all added to the cast of We Need to Break Up, a queer indie music film. The film centers a small band as they follow their dreams of success in the big city. In more film casting news this week, the cast for upcoming queer romantic comedy feature Everything and the Universe was announced, and gay comedian Bowen Yang was added to the cast of the animated Garfield film.

6.) A new ensemble comedy from out actor and influencer Benito Skinner titled Overcompensating has been purchased by Amazon Prime has been announced. The show will follow a closeted football player as he struggles to come to terms with his sexuality. Skinner both wrote and will star in the show. ITV also picked up a new show title Changing Ends, based on the life of gay actor and comedian Alan Carr. Carr will star as himself. 

7.) Queer news anchor Robin Roberts will interview Michelle Obama for an upcoming primetime special titled Michelle Obama: The Light We Carry, a Conversation with Robin Roberts. The special, which we also got a first look at this week, comes in advance of Obama’s second book, The Light We Carry. 8.) Three new additions to the Heartstopper season two cast were announced, including trans actress and Tik Tok star Bel Priestley, and trans actor Ash Self. In other TV casting announcements, upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte added queer actors Charlie Barnett and Rebecca Henderson to its ranks, and Sophie Turner bagged the starring role in ITV’s upcoming true crime mini-series Joan. 

9.) Pansexual genderqueer artist Christine and the Queens’ new album Redcar les adorables étoiles has dropped today, marking his third studio album. In other music news, queer singer and actress Reneé Rapp has released her EP entitled Everything to Everyone today, marking her first big studio release! Non-binary artist SAIAH has released their new single “Blue” today, and queer singer-songwriter Vivi Rincon released her new song “Angela” yesterday.

10.) Snail Mail, the indie rock project from out lesbian artist Lindsey Jordan, has announced the five night event “Valentine Fest” in her hometown of Baltimore. The shows will take place from February 10-14, 2023, coinciding with Valentine’s Day. Tickets are on sale today, so don’t wait to scoop them up!

11.) Inside Out Toronto, an LGBTQ+ film festival, released the eight recipients of the 2022 RE:Focus Fund, which supports women, non-binary, and/or transgender filmmakers. Films this year include A Particular Friend, which takes place in a Nothern Irish conversion camp, and Adore, which focuses on a queer Peruvian-Canadian woman. Check out the whole list of films here! In Broadway news, RuPaul was added to the producers list for the show “Ain’t No Mo”, which opens on December 1.
