Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1.) The dark comedy Not Okay, by out director Quinn Shephard, has been released today exclusively on Hulu. In the film, ambitious aspiring writer Danni (Deutch) finds followers and fame after faking a trip to Paris and posing as a survivor of a deadly attack. But it’s only a matter of time before the façade cracks and Danni learns that online notoriety comes with a terrible price. Among the ensemble cast is pansexual actress Nadia Alexander as queer character Harper and gay actor Karan Soni as Kevin. Watch the trailer below!
2.) Out actor and model Ruby Rose is set to star in the action film Stowaway. The film follows a tenacious party girl (Rose), who fights to survive after three thieves infiltrate her luxury yacht. Watch Stowaway on AMC+ August 5 and check out the official trailer below! In more casting news, out actress Sarah Paulson is set star and executive produce Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming horror-thriller Dust. The film follows a woman who, trapped in a perilous dust storm and haunted by her past, takes extraordinary measures to protect her family.
3.) Out gay Fire Island star Bowen Yang and bisexual Hacks breakout star Meg Stalter have joined the cast of Universal’s untitled comedy from the SNL comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy. The recently-announced film follows three childhood friends who set off to find gold treasure rumored to be buried in a nearby mountain.

4.) The official trailer for A League of Their Own has been released by Amazon Prime Video. Based on the true story and inspired by Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 classic film, the series introduces entirely new all-female baseball players, while taking a deeper look at race and sexuality. The show is from out writer and actor Abbi Jacobson and Gbemisola Ikumelo, who are also in the ensemble cast, as well as out actress Roberta Colindrez and more! 5.) Apple TV has released a first-look teaser trailer for the third season of its critically acclaimed workplace comedy Mythic Quest. The series, following a group of video game developers, includes a romance between queer game testers Dana (Imani Hakim) and Rachel (queer actress and writer Ashly Burch). In the season, Dana is forced to play mediator to her bosses incessant bickering, while Rachel struggles to balance her morals with capitalism at Berkeley. Watch the teaser trailer below!
6.) The alt-history space race series For All Mankind has been renewed for a fourth season on Apple TV+. The upcoming season jumps forward another decade, landing in the 21st century where the USSR is still intact and a female is GOP POTUS, a Black gay astronaut comes out from Mars, and a race to the red planet pits superpowers and private idustry against eachother. Previously, astronaut Ellen Wilson (queer actress Jodi Balfour) entered into a Lavender marriage with NASA engineer Larry Wilson (Nate Corddry) to protect her political aspirations, causing tension in her relationship with Pam Horton (Meghan Leathers). In other renewal news, the hit revival iCarly is returning for a third season on Paramount+. In the series, Carly moves back to Seattle, sharing an apartment with pansexual character Harper (bisexual actress and comedian Laci Mosley) and ultimately relaunching her web show with the help of old and new friends. Harper has an “interesting and all over the place” dating life, including a previous relationship with singer and stylist Dutch (out actress and activist Poppy Liu). Additionally, out singer-songwriter and dancer Kehlani has been has been set to guest star in the upcoming third season of The L Word: Generation Q!
7.) SYFY has released a teaser trailer for GLAAD Media Award-nominated horror drama series Chucky. The series, executive produced by out creator of the Child’s Play franchise Don Mancini, continues to follow the exploits of the infamous Chucky doll. After Chucky’s diabolical plan to invade America’s children’s hospitals failed in season one, Chucky now seeks revenge on those he holds responsible: queer teen Jake, his boyfriend Devon, and his friend Lexy. Chucky season two premieres of USA and SYFY October 5; watch the official teaser trailer below!
8.) Paramount+ has released a teaser trailer for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard. In the season, Jean-Luc Picard is reunited with the former crew of the USS Enterprise, including returning queer characters Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Raffi (Michelle Hurd). Check out the teaser below! Additionally, Star Wars’ social media has confirmed out actress and singer Amandla Stenberg to star as the lead role in upcoming series The Acolyte. In the Star Wars universe, an acolyte refers to individuals with force abilities who learn from a more experienced Sith Lord. The mystery-thriller series takes place in a galaxy of secrets and dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.
9.) HBO has released an official teaser for the second season of Los Espookys, from out comedian Julio Torres and Fred Armisen. The upcoming season continues to follow a group of horror enthusiasts who get paid to stage spooky events. The group includes queer character Andres (Torres), who lies to his boyfriend about the work he is doing; Sombra del Agua (out actress and producer Spike Einbinder), Andrés’ personal demon; and Sonia (out comedian and writer River L. Ramirez), Tico’s verbally abusive daughter. Los Espookys season two premieres September 16 on HBO Max; watch the teaser below!
10.) Out lesbian singer Hayley Kiyoko released her new album Panorama today, as well as a video for the titular track. Stream the album here and watch the video below! Queer pop singer Rina Sawayama has released the title track off of her upcoming album “Hold the Girl.” Listen here! Queer punk trio Big Joanie has released a new rock ‘n roll ballad entitled “In My Arms” (watch the summery music video here) and announced their upcoming album Back Home, out November 4! In more music news, Brooklyn-based queer artist Michael Incognito has released his latest single and video for “BOYS GO”, stream the song here and watch the music video here! Additionally, out singer-songwriter Layke has released their new EP Frequency; stream it here!
11.) MTV has released the nominations for their 2022 Video Music Awards (VMAs), taking place August 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Out nominees include Lil Nas X, Elton John, Rina Sawayama, Dove Cameron, WILLOW, and Anitta; vote for your favorite artists here! In more award news, Outfest has announced the award winners of its 40th Anniversary Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ+ Film Festival. Top prizes include Rita Baghdadi’s Sirens, Gabriel Martin’s Mars One, Amanda Kramer’s Please Baby Please, and Nicola Marsh’s Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story, produced by GLAAD’s own out Director of Transgender Representation Alex Schmider.
