Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) French Oscar contender Two of Us is available on demand today. The film follows two women who have been in a long-term relationship for decades, though others believe they are simply neighbors, but everything changes when one of their daughters finds out the truth. 2) The trailer has been released for festival favorite film The Obituary of Tunde Johnson, which follows the titular Tunde, a young Nigerian-American gay man, who is killed by the police, and then has to live the same day over and over again. The film stars Steven Silver as the lead and Spencer Neville as his closeted boyfriend and will be in limited theaters and on demand on February 26.
3) The film adaptation of Tony Award-winning musical, Dear Evan Hansen, is set to come to theaters on September 24. Out actor Ben Platt will return as the titular role, as well as a cast including out actor Amandla Stenberg, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore. The show was created by out songwriter Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. In more musical news, JoJo Siwa, who recently came out as gay, has a new musical in the works at Nickelodeon that she will executive produce and star in. The movie, The J Team will feature Siwa as a teen who gets a new dance coach and has to adjust to her stricter rules and figure out what dancing means to her.
4) Sundance documentary Ailey, documentary the life and impact of queer dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey has been sold to Neon, who will be releasing the Jamila Wignot film. In more film news, out writer Cheryl Guerriero has a new film in the works I Have Something to Tell You, which is based on her own coming out, and will be produced by Monarch Media. Out actor Luke Evans has been cast in Disney+’s new Pinocchio adaptation as villain The Coachman. The project stars Tom Hanks and will be directed by Robert Zemeckis.
5) Docuseries Amend: The Fight for America has released its first trailer. The series, hosted by Will Smith, tells the story of the fourteenth amendment and the ongoing fight for equality. It features a group of celebrities and activists including Laverne Cox, Lena Waithe, and Samira Wiley, amongst others, and will dedicate an episode to marriage equality. The show will be released on Netflix on February 17.
6) A trailer has been released for new Netflix series Moxie, which follows a group of girls at high school who start a feminist zine to protest the patriarchy of their school. One of the girls in the group is a trans girl, played by Josie Totah. The project is produced by and starring Amy Poehler and will be released on the streamer on March 3.
7) The CW has renewed several of their shows for new seasons. Among the renewals are LGBTQ-inclusive series All American, Batwoman, Charmed, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Dynasty, In the Dark, Legacies, Nancy Drew, Riverdale, Roswell, New Mexico, and Walker. In more CW news, a spinoff of The CW’s Nancy Drew is in the works. The series will follow Tom Swift, a gay, Black billionaire inventor who goes on a road trip to discovering the truth about his father’s mysterious disappearance. Tian Richards will play the lead, and will have a backdoor pilot airing on Nancy Drew later this year.

8) CBS’s new series Clarice has cast Jen Richards, a trans actress and consultant to be part of the show. Richards’s character will discuss the transphobic legacy of Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs, which she has talked about before in Netflix documentary Disclosure. Out actor Sara Gilbert is among the names to be cast in Verbatim, a pilot from HBO Max about the 2019 college admissions scandal. A trailer has been released for HBO’s The Nevers, which follows a group of women who have been “touched” with supernatural abilities. The cast includes out actor Denis O’Hare, and James Norton as pansexual character Hugo. Watch the trailer below and catch the series in April on HBO and HBO Max.
9) Out singer Julien Baker has released a new single from her upcoming album Little Oblivious. The new track, “Favor,” features frequent collaborators Lucy Dacus and GLAAD Media Award-nominee Phoebe Bridgers. Pre-order the album here, and listen to the song below. 10) Bisexual singer/songwriter and GLAAD Media Award nominee Victoria Monét released her newest single, “F.U.C.K.” on Monday. Stream the song here and watch the lyric video below. Out singer Soko released a new song today, “See You in the Dark,” off of the soundtrack of sci-fi romance “Little Fish.” Listen to the soundtrack here.
11) The 2021 NAACP Image Awards were announced on Tuesday. Out LGBTQ nominees include queer talent Janelle Monae, Colman Domingo, Nicco Annan, Tessa Thompson, RuPaul Charles, Cheryl Dunye, and Chika. GLAAD Media Award nominated films Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and the Life Ahead received nominations as well as animated film Onward. LGBTQ-inclusive and GLAAD Media Award nominated animated television shows Big Mouth, Craig of the Creek and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power all received nominations as well as television nominated includes black-ish, grown-ish, Insecure, All Rise, Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country, Power Book II: Ghost, Little Fires Everywhere and more. 12) The nominations for the 2021 WGA Awards have been announced. Standouts include a nomination for out writer Alan Ball for GLAAD Media Award-nominated film Uncle Frank, in the Original Long Form Category along with Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood; while Bad Education and Little Fires Everywhere received nominations in the Adapted Long Form category. Other LGBTQ-inclusive nominated television projects include The Boys, What We Do in the Shadows, The Flight Attendant, Lovecraft Country, individual episodes of BoJack Horseman, Euphoria, Dead to Me, and Grace and Frankie.
