The GLAAD Wrap: ‘The Prom’ and ‘La Leyenda Negra’ available to stream; ‘Batwoman’ Season 2 trailer; new music videos from Troye Sivan, King Princess, Big Freedia; and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Queer Latinx coming-of-age film La Leyenda Negra is now streaming on HBO Max. The movie follows an undocumented Latina high school girl in Compton, CA named Aleteia, as she navigates the Trump administration’s attacks on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), white-washed history curriculum, and a budding crush on a classmate. Watch the trailer below and catch the film on the streamer today! In other film release news, Ryan Murphy’s The Prom is out today on Netflix! 2) In more film news, it was announced yesterday that lesbian Latina superhero America Chavez (aka “Miss America”) will be portrayed by Xochitl Gomez in the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The teen superhero is known for her amazing style, witty tongue, and a way with the ladies. In other film news, out actor Stephen Fry has joined the cast of queer feature film Now & Then. The story follows a middle-aged man (played by actor Richard Armitage) who returns to his childhood home following the death of his father, confronting memories of his time in school and an intense, passionate affair he shared with fellow male student. In more film news, Kid Cudi (aka Scott Mescudi) and his recently launched Mad Solar banner are developing an adaptation of the coming-of-age campus novel Real Life, with Mescudi set to star. Real Life is the semi-autobiographical novel debut of out writer Brandon Taylor, which follows an introverted, queer, Black scientist in a predominantly white, Midwestern PhD program as he navigates complex friendships, romantic relationships, betrayals and mercies, all over the course of one weekend.

3) The trailer for the second season of the CW’s Batwoman has been released. Out bisexual and Black actress Javicia Leslie stars as Ryan Wilder, the latest Gotham resident to don the legendary Batsuit. Watch the trailer below and catch the premiere of the series January 17, 2021, only on the CW. In other TV news, the premiere date of the second episode of Euphoria’s standalone bridge episodes has been announced. “Part 2: Jules,” also called “F*ck Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob,” will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on January 24, 2021. The episode follows Jules, played by out trans actress Hunter Schafer, over the Christmas holiday as she reflects on her year. Schafer co-wrote the episode with series creator Sam Levinson; the two of them are also reportedly writing a movie together.

4) The cast list of queens for the 13th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race has been ru-vealed! This season, history is being made with the inclusion of Gottmik, the first transmasculine contestant to compete on the show. RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13 will premiere on Friday, January 1, 2021 at 8:00PM ET.

5) In TV renewal news, Netflix has renewed dark lesbian dramedy Feel Good for a second season. The semi-autobiographical series, which is co-written by, co-created by, and starring out creator Mae Martin, follows the life of Mae, a comedian and recovering addict whose addictive behaviors and intense romanticism dominate her day-to-day. In case you missed it, watch the trailer for season one below. In other TV renewal news, crime drama Big Sky has been given a six-episode back order by ABC. The show features a transfeminine, non-binary character named Jerrie, played by out non-binary actor Jesse James Keitel.

6) In more TV news, out creator Justin Simien (Dear White People) is developing an event series around Star Wars character Lando Calrissian called Star Wars: Lando. The character of Lando has been considered pansexual in the past, but there has been little explicit exploration of this identity in portrayals of him thus far, which may change with this iteration. In other TV dev news, a reboot of HBO show True Blood is reportedly in development at the network. Out Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina developer (and GLAAD Media Award-winner) Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will write the script and executive produce, while the original series creator and showrunner, out creator Alan Ball, is also attached to executive produce. The original show featured a number of beloved queer characters. In other development news, out The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken has signed an overall deal with Universal Television to develop and produce scripted content. As part of the deal, Chaiken will serve as executive producer & showrunner on the first season of NBC’s upcoming Law & Order: SVU spinoff series, Law & Order: Organized Crime. In more TV dev news, out actress and producer Lena Waithe’s production company Hillman Grad, in collaboration with Amazon Studios is developing a series about a female Nigerian-American tech professional in Boston. The series is based on a play by Obehi Janice, titled Ole White Sugah Daddy.

7) In other TV news, Freeform has ordered a pilot for series Single Drunk Female, directed and executive produced by out Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland. The series follows a 28-year-old irreverent alcoholic who, after a spectacularly embarrassing public breakdown, is forced to move back home with her overbearing mother to sober up and avoid jail time. Headland’s real-life wife Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll) plays Olivia, a brilliant melancholic lesbian who works as one of the greeters at AA. In more Leslye Headland news, more details about her new Star Wars series were announced yesterday. To be released on Disney+, The Acolyte is a mystery-thriller series full of unknown secrets and dark-side powers, set in the final days of the High Republic era.

8) In more casting news, a new queer character has been announced for season 2 of out creator Tarell Alvin McCraney’s OWN drama David Makes Man. Bobbi Baker will play Robin, the partner of the main character’s mother, Gloria. Robin is a loyal and level partner, and together, the two women run Robin’s Nest in Little Havana, a foster home for LGBTQ+ youth. In other TV casting news, out actor Oscar Montoya has been cast in the HBO Max pilot Minx. The series takes place in 1970’s Los Angeles and focuses on a young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher to create the first erotic magazine for women. Montoya will portray Richie, the magazine’s recently out-of-the-closet photographer.

9) In other casting news, out lesbian actress Rosie O’Donnell is set to appear in the second season of Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q. O’Donnell will play Carrie, a brash and kindhearted public defender who is thrust into Bette’s (Jennifer Beals) life and quickly gets under her skin. In more casting news, Marisela Zumbado is set to join the cast of HBO Max series Generation as a queer character. Lena Dunham’s half-hour dramedy will feature the character of Lucia, a young high-school junior who is confident, bold, and queer, and loves to shake things up.

10) Out singer Troye Sivan and Kacey Musgraves have released a video to Sivan’s song “Easy,” also featuring Mark Ronson. Watch the retro-inspired technicolored video below! Out musician Rina Sawayama also recently released an “Extended Reality Video” for her latest single “LUCID.” Watch the video here!       

11) Out lesbian singer King Princess has released a video for her latest song “PAIN.” Catch the video below! Out rapper Snow Tha Product also released a video to her song “Tell You Like This.” Watch the video here.

12) Out musician Big Freedia has teamed up with Flo Millli for a holiday-themed video for song “Better Be.” Watch the video below, and catch the song on Big Freedia’s Smokin Santa Christmas EP out today, Dec. 11. In other album release news, the Frock Destroyers, a musical collective comprised of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestants Divina De Campo, Baga Chipz, and Blu Hydrangea, released their debut album FROCK4LIFE today. 13) Cyndi Lauper has released the lineup for her Home for the Holidays virtual concert experience. The lineup includes LGBTQ artists such as: Adam Lambert, Billy Porter, Boy George, Brandi Carlile, Brittany Howard, Carson Kressley, Kim Petras, King Princess, Meg Myers, Phoebe Bridgers, Shea Diamond, Justin Tranter, Harvey Fierstein, and Judy Gold. The concert will premiere today, Dec. 11 on TikTok at 8 PM ET, and on YouTube Dec. 13 at 8PM ET. All proceeds will go to True Colors United, a non-profit dedicated to solving LGBTQ homelessness. 14) In other event news, out actor and performer Billy Porter is set to co-host Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve with Ryan Seacrest. The show will air on Dec. 31 on ABC. In more event news, out performer RuPaul will headline YouTube’s New Year’s celebration called Hello 2021. Other performers include Dua Lipa and Demi Lovato. Hello 2021 will be replacing YouTube’s annual Rewind video, and will air at various times across different regions of the world. Hello 2021: Americas will premiere on Thursday, December 31 at 10:30PM ET on the YouTube Originals channel.
