Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Sony and Blumhouse have released the trailer for The Craft: Legacy and announced that the film will be available for audiences just in time for Halloween! The Craft: Legacy, a continuation to the 1996 original, follows four teenage witches who face consequences and corruption as they lean into their newly discovered powers. This edition stars Zoey Luna as Lourdes, a member of the coven, who is a trans girl. GLAAD consulted with the production to help find and cast Luna. The Craft: Legacy will be out on digital demand October 28.
2) Streaming service Peacock has launched a trailer for the upcoming documentary film Freedia Got A Gun, premiering October 15. Bounce legend Big Freedia decided to use their platform to raise awareness about gun violence after the murder of her brother, Adam. In this documentary, Freedia shares her experience growing up gay in New Orleans, living through the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, chasing the dream of a career as a musician, and diving into her own and others experience with gun violence and the causes behind it. Check out the trailer below. In other Peacock news, the reimagining of Saved By the Bell, starring Josie Totah, will premiere on November 25.
3) The trailer is out now for the upcoming film Supernova starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci as long-time couple Sam and Tusker, reuniting with friends and family and visiting special places from their past as they cope with Tusker’s diagnosis of early onset dementia. The film Good Joe Bell sold to Solstice Studios for worldwide release after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie is based on the real-life story of father and son Joe and Jadin Bell. Fifteen-year-old gay Oregon teen Jadin Bell died by suicide in January 2013. His father Joe decided to honor his son’s memory by beginning “Joe’s Walk for Change.” No release date is yet set for the film. Hulu has dropped a trailer for the upcoming horror satire Bad Hair, directed and written by out Dear White People creator Justin Simien and featuring Lena Waithe and Laverne Cox. Bad Hair premieres on Hulu October 23.
4) HBO Max’s upcoming four-part series Equal, documenting the history of the LGBTQ community, has dropped the first trailer. The series stars several LGBTQ actors and will be narrated by Billy Porter. Equal premieres on HBO Max on October 22. Check out the trailer below.
5) The animated series Harley Quinn has been renewed for a third season and jumped from DC Universe to HBO Max. The second season focused on the developing romance between Harley and Poison Ivy, and executive producers have said that they will continue to focus on continuing to explore that relationship in future seasons. The first two seasons are available now on HBO Max. In other renewal news, Showtime has given a pickup to Billions for a sixth season. The series is currently midway through its fifth season which will return next year. Asia Kate Dillon plays non-binary character Taylor who in the most recent season was forced back to Axe Capital where they must fight to protect the employees and assets under them.
6) Out director Nneka Onuorah (The Same Difference) is set to direct the four-part Quibi documentary series Black Equals Beauty, produced by Queen Latifah. The series will look at shifts in American beauty culture and celebrate and honor Black women who have had to fight against Eurocentric beauty standards and oppressive archetypes. Amazon has signed an overall deal with Matthew López, the out playwright behind the GLAAD Media award-winning Broadway play The Inheritance which centered on a group of gay New Yorkers 20 years after the height of the HIV and AIDS epidemic.
7) Out actress, comedian and writer Sabrina Jalees is developing a new series at ABC, as yet untitled. The series would follow first time parents Sam and Bertie whose lives fall into chaos when their biological donor visits and wants to be part of their lives. Out bi actress Alia Shawkat is partnering with Natasha Lyonne to develop a new series for Amazon, Desert People, which Shawkat will also write for and star in if the series is picked up. Desert People will follow a family of immigrants from Iraq who run a club in Palm Springs, Shawkat stars as the couple’s daughter living in L.A. who is “coming to terms with her sexuality.” The Obamas will produce a new Netflix animated children’s’ show Ada Twist, Scientist from out creator Chris Nee (Doc McStuffins) to launch in 2021.
8) Out actor and What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén has been cast in a recurring role on NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. In a multiple episode arc, he will play George, a new programmer who is seeking approval from Zoey and his colleagues. Non-binary musician Dua Saleh will be joining the upcoming third season of Netflix’s Sex Education as Cal, a non-binary student who clashes with the new Headmistress’ vision for the school. Chelsea Tavares, who plays queer character Patience, has been upped from recurring to a regular for the upcoming third season of The CW’s All American.

9) Out actress Cherry Jones has been cast in the upcoming Apple Original Film The Sky is Everywhere, an adaptation of the novel of the same name, and Alan Cumming and Ariana DeBose have joined an untitled musical comedy for Apple TV. Out actor Noah Galvin (The Real O’Neals) will join the fourth season of ABC’s The Good Doctor as one of the first-years competing for a resident position. In other casting news, a long-distance gay couple, Will and James, are joining the upcoming 32nd season of The Amazing Race.
10) HBO has confirmed that its GLAAD Media Award-nominated series Euphoria will air a special one-off bridge episode between season one and the second season which has been delayed because of COVID-19. Billy Porter is set to direct a re-imagined revival of the Broadway musical The Life for the upcoming season of Encores! at New York City Center.
11) Queer and non-binary artist Shamir dropped a new album today, Shamir, their second album of the year. Shamir is available to stream or purchase now. Queer artist Loren Kramar released two new tracks recently, “How Am I Supposed to Dream” and “Flowers.”
12) Fab the Duo released the video for their newest single “Party For Two.” Bi musician mxmtoon has released a new EP, Dusk, this week with seven new tracks including a feature with Carly Rae Jepsen. This is the companion work to her earlier 2020 release Dawn.
13) Out artist Lady Gaga has premiered a video for her newest single 911 from her recently released album Chromatica. Halsey dropped a new video for her song “929” in honor of her recent birthday as a gift to fans, featuring a collection of behind the scenes photos and videos from her life and career, and Demi Lovato released a new track “Still Have Me.”
14) Lilah Sturges (The Magicians: Alice’s Story, Lumberjanes) will be releasing a new graphic novel with Oni-Lion Forge, Girl Haven, a fantastical story about a young kid and trans identity. Ash’s mom left years ago, and Ash’s dad is ready to get rid of her things. But Ash finds themselves and their Pride Club transported into Koretris – an all-girl world whose portal was housed in some of Ash’s mom’s belongings. The group make new friends, join in the fight to defend Koretris, and figure out what it means that Ash (who has always been called a boy) exists in a world that only allows girls. Girl Haven will hit shelves February 9, 2021.
15) Nominations are out now for the 2020 Billboard Awards, out rapper Lil Nas X racked up the second highest nominations at 13 total. Other LGBTQ artists nominated include Halsey and Elton John. Voting is now open for the 2020 E! People’s Choice Awards, which are set to air November 15. Several LGBTQ stars and inclusive projects are nominated including Dan Levy, Lili Reinhart, Jaida Essence Hall, Gigi Goode, Hannah Gadsby, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Kate McKinnon, Janelle Monáe, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Halsey, Schitt’s Creek, Never Have I Ever, Wynonna Earp, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, The Umbrella Academy, Grey’s Anatomy, This is Us, Dead to Me, Grown-ish, Modern Family, Birds of Prey, The Old Guard, Onward, Queer Eye, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Watch What Happens Live, and more.
