The GLAAD Wrap; ‘Onward’ in theaters; trailers for ‘Elite’ and ‘Boomerang;’ and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Disney and Pixar’s Onward hits theaters today. The film follows two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there. Out actor Lena Waithe is in the film as Officer Spencer, a queer police officer they run into on their journey. “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world,” director Dan Scanlon told Yahoo of the representation. 2) Young Adult Novel Gracefully Grayson, which follows a young transgender girl on her journey to tell the world she’s trans, will be adapted into a feature film. Non-binary filmmaker Henry Alberto will pen the screenplay based on the book by Ami Polonksy, and Yeardley Smith’s Paperclip Ltd will produce the film.

3) Documentary Shakedown, which follows the Black queer women and men who were active in the lesbian strip club scene of the early aughts, will be the first non-adult release from Pornhub. The film is directed by Leilah Weinraub and has played in part in exhibits at museums in Manhattan. Netflix’s upcoming teen romantic comedy The Half of It, directed by out filmmaker Alice Wu will be released on May 1. The film, which was recently selected for Tribeca Film Festival, follows a teenage girl who ends up helping a jock write love letters to the girl they both have a crush on.  

4) An HBO adaptation of popular Sony PlayStation game The Last Of Us is in the works from game creator Neil Druckmann and writer Craig Mazin. The post-apocalyptic game follows survivor Joel and teenager Ellie, who is a lesbian. In addition to the series, The Last Of Us’ sequel game will be released this May.Out Slave Play writer Jeremy O. Harris has signed a deal with HBO and is developing a pilot of the network as well. He currently is working on season two of Euphoria.

5) Out Schitt’s Creek actor Emily Hampshire has been cast in upcoming Epix series Jerusalem’s Lot, as Rebecca Morgan, a woman writing a story on family that begins to uncover a mystery. Out actor Charlie Barnett has been cast in NBC pilot Ordinary Joe, as Eric Payne one of the closes friends of the titular Joe. A new trailer has been released for the second season of BET’s Boomerang, which includes several queer characters in its ensemble. The show also announced that its second season will be entired directed by women of color. Watch the trailer below.

6) Netflix has released a new trailer for the third season of Elite, which will be released on March 13 on the streaming service. The show features several queer characters in an elite Spanish boarding school.Quibi’s Gayme Show, hosted by out comedians Matt Rogers and Dave Mizzoni, has announced a premiere date of April 6. The show is a game show based around queer culture. Quibi also announced You Ain’t Got These, a series hosted by Lena Waithe about sneakers, which will also premiere on April 6.

7) Out singer Lady Gaga announced her sixth album Chromatica will be released on April 10. She also announced a “Chromatica Ball” this summer, hitting six cities. 8) Netflix announced comedy festival “Netflix Is a Joke Fest” upcoming this spring in Los Angeles. The series of shows includes an all LGBTQ show, “Stand Out” at the Greek Theater, featuring queer comedians such as Hannah Gadsby, Margaret Cho, Wanda Sykes, Joel Kim Booster, Trixie Mattel, and more. 9) Documentary Into the Cellar tells the story of The Gateways Club, a lesbian club in the U.K. that has been open since the 1930s. The film is currently funding, to tell a part of history that is often ignored when it comes to queer women in this century. Click here to learn more and contribute to the project.
