Tim Wildmon
President, American Family Association
—Insisted: “Homosexuality is not something the president should celebrate. It’s unnatural, unhealthy and immoral behavior.”
—Wrote a column longing for the days when homosexuality “was generally considered abnormal,” insisting that. “The Scripture says this behavior is unnatural, immoral, and unhealthy. Christian or not, everyone pretty much knows this, even if they are afraid to say so publicly. God made male for female sexually. As for the transgendered, they have serious issues that cause them profound confusion. It’s really tragic.”
—Said Christians can’t concede “that homosexuality is something that is healthy and good and normal for people.”
—Referred to a transgender woman as “a sexually confused man dressed as a woman.”
—Launched a boycott of Target because of the retailer’s transgender restroom accommodations: “Target’s harmful policy poses a danger to women and children. We think many customers will agree.”
—Said President Obama should tell gay people to “stop doing what you’re doing”: “‘You know one of the real ironies of this proclamation is the president here cites the need for more funding for HIV/AIDS,” Wildmon says. “But, unlike Michelle Obama, who advocates that children stay off the sodas, he doesn’t advocate behavior change. When it comes to homosexual behavior effecting your health, why doesn’t he say, ‘Stop doing what you’re doing and you won’t get AIDS?’“
—Said he can easily spot gay men because they “walk like a girl, a lot of ’em.”
—Said LGBTQ groups are “vile in many ways.”
—Said it’s a fact that gays are “immoral” and “unnatural”; uses this to deny President Obama’s faith.
—Insisted gay people must “repent”: “Our president is promoting the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered and queer agenda like there is no tomorrow. God says homosexuality is immoral, unnatural and unhealthy and should be repented of, not embraced and celebrated as a valid ‘alternative lifestyle.’”
—Attacked NFL player Michael Sam’s onscreen kiss with his boyfriend as “gross,” “immoral, unhealthy and unnatural”: “It was gross. But then I’m an old-school prude who doesn’t believe men should be having sex with other men, so that is the reaction you would expect from people like me. I believe that kind of behavior is immoral, unhealthy and unnatural. If people want to live this lifestyle, that is their choice, but this idea of forcing people who disagree with it to applaud or else be shouted down, fined by the government or lose your job has gotten way out of hand.”
—Supported idea that gays make people want to throw up (at 4:05 mark): “He said, ‘it makes me want to throw up, the idea of two grooms’ —well that’s the way a lot of people feel.”
—Referring to President Obama’s Father’s Day recognition of gay parents, wrote: “Here we have the leader of our nation and the Democrat [sic] Party celebrating sexual behavior which is contrary to nature and pushing a household structure that we know is harmful to children … Our President is so committed to normalizing homosexual conduct that he is putting the twisted sexual desires of adults ahead of the needs of children.”
—Said: “If President Obama, Congressional Democrats, and homosexual activists get their wish, your son or daughter may be forced to share military showers and barracks with active and open homosexuals who may very well view them with sexual interest.”
—Said of young equality activist Will Phillips decision to speak at a Pride parade: “It’s shameful that adults would abuse a brain-washed child in this way. He’s obviously just parroting the nonsense he’s been told by manipulative adults. For gay activists to trot out this child and make him the poster child for promoting unnatural sexual expression is a form of child abuse.” [*Note: Phillips is incorrectly identified as ‘Will Marshall’]
—Claimed: “There is nothing about homosexual conduct to be proud of, and much to be ashamed of.”
—Said the day the Supreme Court overturned DOMA was “a tragic day for kids who will wind up in same-sex households.”
—Said of nondiscrimination laws that prevent businesses from discriminating: “This sounds like Stalinist Russia or China under Mao, where those who thought for themselves were forced under government coercion into re-education camps. This is not the America that was given to us by our Founders.”
—Compared a vendor serving gay customers to a vendor serving known hate groups; calls LGBTQ activists “the Gay Gestapo” for suggesting otherwise: “This does beg the question about freedom of religion, freedom of association and what the government can compel its citizens to do. Should the government punish the Jewish photographer because he refuses to take pictures for a gathering of Skinheads? Should the government levy fines against an African-American printer who refuses to print posters for a Ku Klux Klan rally? Should a homosexual painter be forced to paint signs for the infamous Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka that reads “God Hates Fags!” The answer is no to all of these. The government should not compel an individual to engage in a business transaction that violates their conscience. The “Gay Gestapo” (of which not all gays and lesbians are a part) is now pushing well beyond “live and let live” territory into using the law to punitively enforce their political and social agenda.”
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
